Lar's This & That

Are You Mr and Mrs Average

A new survey came up with a bunch of facts about the average family:  They  drive a blue Ford and one other car, and they have two kids, three cell phones,  and three laptops.  The kids go to bed at 8:10 P.M. and the grown-ups go to  bed at 11:23.  They wake up at 6:45 A.M. and an hour later on weekends. And  they argue five times a day . . . twice over what to watch on television and who  gets the remote.  Sounding like your household?    (Daily  Mail)

More Tempting Than Sex and Cigarettes

A new study found Facebook and Twitter is more tempting than cigarettes and sex!  Researchers at the University of Chicago discovered through an online poll that the urge to interact through tweets and comments was stronger than sex and cigs.

In fact, researchers concluded that social networking was the hardest desire to resist.  Well, at least it's a lot cheaper!

Marriage Why?

A survey by the UK version of the Girl Scouts (Girlguiding) found that marriage is not on the priority list for teens as much as it used to be.

The majority of girls 7 to 21 years old defined "success" as "being confident and independent" rather than "being married."  Just three years ago the majority chose marriage as the #1 achievement before 30.

Ways to say 'I Love You' without words... try a few of these

Laughing at your partners bad jokes

Giving them a framed photo of the two of you

Do the manly-man or girly-girl thing -- meaning wash her car and gas it up, or take him to a car show or movie he really wants to see

Show up at a business event as a loving spouse

Do something for them that they hate to do -- spider out of the bathtub, for example, or a midnight run so the kids have milk in the morning.

Wine Myths

With the Wine & Garlic Festival coming up this weekend at Rebec Vineyards in Amherst, The Black Dog Wine & Music Festival at Chateau Morrisette, and on Oct 21st, Wine & Unwind Wine Festival at the Salem Civic Center -  I thought this would work well for wine lovers.

Here are a couple wine myths to help you  navigate your way through the grape stuff ...

Red wine with red  meat, white wine with fish and poultry – This rule of thumb came from a time  when food was simpler and less fusion-based. Nowadays, food is more complicated  and the rule is – drink whichever wine you enjoy most.

The 15 minute rule – When it comes to wine temp, use this as a guide: Take the white wine out of the  fridge 15 minutes before serving and put the red wine IN the fridge 15 minutes  before serving.

Pair  sweet wines with dessert – Again, this is a matter of taste. If  you like sweet wine, go ahead and have it with your creme brulee or other dessert. Then again, a good Cab goes great with chocolate. Bottom line: Drink what you like!

Staying Healthy Today

It's Tea Time

A soothing cup of tea is no longer just for fighting off a cold. At a recent International Scientific Symposium on Tea and Human Health in D.C.,  researchers promoted the many benefits that drinking  tea has on chronic illness.

Green tea can help reduce the risk of fractures and improve bone  mass, slowing the progress of osteoperosis.  A six-month study of 171  postmenopausal women consumed the equivalent of four to six cups a day. Within  three months, the bone stress damage was reduced.

Tea contains flavonoids, which induce dilation of the arteries and could lead to a  reduction in strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases.

Flavonoids in green and black tea can provide a probiotic effect in the lower  gastrointestinal tract.

Black tea is thought to reduce blood pressure, leading to a reduction in strokes   and cardiovascular diseases.

Tea can also help burn 100 calories a day.

Good News Story

A Pennsylvania man had his last wish granted by Brad Paisley this past weekend at a tour  stop in Hershey.

Lee Feldman has terminal pancreatic cancer and was worried his  most prized possession, a custom made guitar would just sit and collect dust.  Well, arrangements were made for Lee and Brad to meet backstage where Lee handed  over the guitar. Not only did Brad accept the gift, but promised to play it on  his new album.

Feldman said, “That’s the greatest thing I wanted to hear.”
