Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi is getting some academic recognition.
The BBC says the guitarist was presented this week with an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Coventry University. He dressed in the traditional cap and gown for the ceremony, which took place at Coventry Cathedral.
Another milestone in an amazing year! Thanks to Coventry University for a great morning. Now in Helsinki for tour! pic.twitter.com/MaBPF41xkO— Tony Iommi (@tonyiommi) November 19, 2013
Iommi admits he "couldn't believe it" when he learned he'd be receiving the degree. He says university officials simply decided to honor him "because of the invention of heavy metal" and "all the things" he's done over the years.
Black Sabbath just launched their European tour in support of their latest album, 13. The group has shows scheduled this weekend in Scandinavia.
